Hi, I’m Andrew Magwood
I always hated the “about me” page on websites like this because they’re written in third person …even though they’re typically written by the the owner of the site.
So after trying to make this sound super professional by talking rigidly and formally about myself, I copied a smart guy I know of and decided to write this page like it was a letter to a friend.
Which in many ways, it is.
Anyway – what do you want to know?
I’m in my 40’s. I live in Norwich, Connecticut with my wife, Rachelle.
We have two kids, two grand-kids, and (although we are not real pet lovers) have shared our home with three cats and a dog named Nikita, who also thinks she is a cat.

You’re probably wondering,
Is This Guy Worth My Time And Attention?
For many readers, my answer is NO.
1 – I will not just tell you what you want to hear.
For some reason, people think that if they hire a lawyer, they will give them answers they want to hear.
I get it. You want good news. Everyone does. Lawyers are supposed to solve problems. That’s what attracted me to the law (more on that later).
I thought it would be easy to help good people work through the legal system.
Well, it wasn’t. I had to start telling my clients and potential clients bad news.
I do get excellent results for my clients every day. But it isn’t always a rose garden and it takes lots of work, frustration, and perseverance to get the results.
…And I still deliver bad news to clients all the time.
So if you’re not prepared to hear your lawyer tell you the truth …even when the truth stinks, I’m not your guy.
2 – If you are not in for the long haul
you’re not going to appreciate my work.
No, I don’t want your legal matter to drag out. But here’s why I’m telling you this.
Step through the legal “looking glass,” and you’ll see and hear all kinds of stories and information about motions that end litigation, or an airtight strategy for winning every case. You will know about a friend, or an uncle who did something and it all worked out for them in a weekend.
Does some of it work?
Probably. For that particular case. But when we start working for you, we have a “runway-to-runway” plan for your legal matter. We may have to course correct from time to time, but we will develop a plan at the outset that, many times, has to be followed all the way to the end to obtain a result. If you try to shortcut the process, you may end up dragging a matter out needlessly.
And that is a waste of time. If you want to waste time go see a movie. It’s way more fun than the legal system.
3 – If you’re looking for “The Cheap Way,”
I don’t want to help you.
It’s important you understand what I’m telling you.
I can help you, I just won’t. I’m capable of it, but I refuse to do it.
Because when I hear someone say, “What’s the cheapest way”, what I’m really hearing is, “I’m not fully invested in the long term success of my legal matter …and therefore do not fully value you, your time, or the limits of our justice system.”
And that really translates to “I don’t really value legal services.”
Look, legal matters are HARD WORK. No, that does not mean it should always costs a mint to complete a matter, but it does require some commitment. Sometimes we can find an inexpensive solution to short-circuit the process.
But without serious commitment, it severely limits your options.

Well, why wouldn’t I tell you?
I mean I just told you above that I will always be honest with you. I only take cases where I can add value for my clients.
If I cannot help, I won’t …but I probably know someone who can. And those referrals don’t cost you anything.
The idea is you’ll say, “Wow. This lawyer really is a straight shooter. Whenever I or anyone I know needs a lawyer, I’ll always go to Andrew.”
Pretty simple, right?
I call it the old “Demonstrate You Can Help Them By Actually Helping Them” trick.

How Do I Know If Your Stuff Is Any Good?
Well, the smartest thing to do is call me or schedule a consultation.

But I think I’m supposed to do the whole “self aggrandizing biography” thing now so here goes:
I started my legal career as a law clerk while studying at the University of Connecticut.
At that time, I worked for a small-firm lawyer who always seemed to get good results. I mean, always. And he taught me how to think through a legal matter from beginning to end, how to write in a way that was looked on with favor by judges, and how to be very, very careful in looking at legal issues.
His mentoring was invaluable.
But instead of starting right into practicing on my own, I went to work for a large, regional law firm doing insurance coverage work.
Then I went to work for a Fortune 100 insurance company, then another large law firm.
It was a good experience of course, but creativity was …how do you say …”frowned upon.”
Anyway – I learned how big law firms work through legal matters.
Did I learn anything new?
Was it better than what I had learned from my first mentor?
Anyway – I started my own practice and started facing off against huge, national law firms. (I mean, firms that specialize in practice areas with hundreds of lawyers and huge budgets.) I was using the strategies my first mentor taught me. And winning.
I was blown away.
Fast forward to today and I’ve helped clients in lawsuits and transactional matters of just about every kind. (Sorry, no criminal or divorces.)
